On April 29th, ExtraTime.ie reporter Stephen Walsh will abseil down the side of Croke Park in aid of the ISPCC and we need your help!
At the start of the season, ExtraTime.ie reporter Stephen Walsh took on the challenge of resurrecting the ET betting column, which had laid dormant since the 2013 season. To put it into context, only Liam Buckley and Stephen Kenny are still managing the same teams in the Premier Division that they were that season.
This column had a difference in that all the profit was going to be given to charity. However, as followers of the column will note, that save for the week in which Extratime.ie made a donation to Blood Bikes South it has failed to reach the target despite Stephen's best efforts.
It currently works by Stephen selecting his bets and then Paddy Power graciously enhance the bet while also sponsoring a bet. All the winnings from the bet go directly to the charity with Sophia Housing Agency selected for this week's bet, which will be published later today.
However the folks at ET HQ want to raise some money as Stephen's excuse of 'if only that team scored an extra goal we would be sorted' was running dry. And so we decided to set Stephen a few interim challenges until they do start winning. First up, we are going to make him abseil off the roof of Croke Park to raise funds for the ISPCC.
Standing at around 44 metres high - more than ten storeys - Stephen will launch off the roof of the GAA Headquarters with only a couple of ropes as company and we are hoping that in doing so we can raise much needed funds for the ISPCC.
We will be recording Stephen’s adventures in Croke Park and you can keep tabs on Stephen’s progress on the day (29th April) via our social media channels using the #ETCharity. In the meantime, we are looking for you to sponsor Stephen’s abseil – all donations big or small are very welcome.
The ISPCC (Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children) is the national child protection charity. The ISPCC delivers innovative child-centred services in a number of locations throughout Ireland. Childline is Ireland's only 24-hour listening service for children and young people. It is free, confidential and non-judgmental, providing support to children across Ireland.
The more people that know about ISPCC/Childline, the greater their impact, so please also spread the word by sharing our page with your friends and family. Thank you in advance for your generosity, it means a lot!
Gareth Penrose is the founder of Extratime.ie. The site was originally thought up and named in the back of Kennedy’s pub in Drumcondra in early 2007 but it wasn’t until March 2008 that it appeared on the internet. Gareth was previously involved with Shelbourne Football Club where he ran the club website from 2001 to 2006.
Gareth has written many articles, covered many games, and got to experience Europa League finals and European Championships, but many would say his greatest achievements have been on the playing field. From scoring his first ever goal for Shelbourne to executing possibly the slowest falling down / bicycle kick in a 6-a-side media tournament.
Gareth is also responsible for coding and designing the site so any complaints about Extratime can be directed at him. He’s also been known to talk endlessly about TV shows and computers which you can follow over at his account on twitter. He now can be seen irregularly in the press box in Drogheda and ranting about attendance figures and European coefficients.
