Gareth McCaffrey leaves Drogs
Published: May 18, 2017

Drogheda United have announced that forward Gareth McCaffrey has left the club by mutual consent.

“Gareth was a very important player for us last season in getting promoted to the Premier Division and scored some key goals,” Drogheda manager Pete Mahon told www.droghedaunited.ie.

“On behalf of the club, I would like to thank him for all his hard work and wish him the very best,” Mahon said.

McCaffrey first joined Drogheda mid-way through the 2016 season, on loan from Shamrock Rovers. After playing in a friendly against MK Dons, he made his competitive debut away to Shelbourne in July of 2016.

The former Shamrock Rovers and Hibernian player went on to be a key player as Drogheda earned promotion to the Premier Division via the play-off, with McCaffrey scoring six goals in twelve games.

The 21-year-old made his loan move a permanent one ahead of the 2017 season and had played a part in every competitive game Drogheda have played so far this season.

With three teams being relegated this season, Drogheda’s aim from the start of the season has been to stay up.

Pete Mahon’s men currently sit 7th in the league on 14 points and have scored thirteen goals in their opening thirteen games.

McCaffrey started eight of those league games this season for the Boynesiders’ and came off the bench in the other five.

As Drogheda’s second highest goalscorer so far this season, with 2 goals, he had scored against both Galway United and Sligo Rovers in the first and last game of the opening set of fixtures.
