Former Bohemians midfielder Paul Keegan joins Waterford from Doncaster Rovers
Published: July 15, 2017

Waterford FC have announced the signing of midfielder Paul Keegan. The 33 year old Dubliner joins the Blues after spending the last six years with Doncaster Rovers.

“I’m looking forward to being back in Ireland, playing games and helping to contribute to the team continuing to win games and ultimately the league title,” Keegan said, speaking to waterfordfc.ie.

“The challenge of Waterford excites me. Waterford are in a great position at the minute, sitting top of the table and looking to add a few players to make sure they keep winning games and keep doing well.”

Keegan returns to the League of Ireland having been a part of the Doncaster squad that were crowned League One Champions in 2013.

The midfielder is no stranger to winning with the player having successful stints with both Drogheda United and Bohemians between 2005 and 2011.

While at Drogheda Keegan won the 2005 FAI Cup, two Setanta Sports Cups (2006 and 20070, and the the 2007 League of Ireland title.

During his time with the Gypsies he won another Premier Division title in 2009, as Bohemians claimed their first back-to-back titles in the club’s long history. He also won a League of Ireland Cup that same year, and in 2010 he added another Setanta Sports Cup medal to his trophy cabinet.

With his signing for The Blues Keegan also re-connects with Waterford’s Director of Football, Pat Fenlon, who was manager of Bohemians during his time there.

“I knew in signing for Waterford and for Pat that everything would be done right. He’s very meticulous in his organisation and he has formed a very good coaching team at the club. Obviously the contact with Pat and my relationship with him at Bohemians previously helps,” he said.

“Now I’m ready to go. I’ve been training individually and trying to keep myself as fit as possible but the past week of training with Waterford and the lads has really sharpened me up so now I’m just looking forward to playing games and getting back into the swing of things on the pitch,” Keegan added.

Keegan is Waterford’s second new arrival during this transfer window after Shamrock Rovers Sean Heaney joined the club on loan last week (see here).

The midfielder will be included in the Waterford squad against Longford Town this weekend subject to international clearance (kick-off 7.30pm).
