Former Ireland under-21 striker Sean Scannell joins Burton Albion on loan from Huddersfield Town

Former Republic of Ireland under-21 forward Sean Scannell has joined Burton Albion on loan from Huddersfield Town until the end of the 2017-18 English league season.

The 26-year-old made 16 appearances as the Terriers were promoted to the English top flight for the first time since 1972 last season.

He has made 161 appearances in total for the Yorkshire in five years since signing from Crystal Palace, scoring nine times.

The versatile London-born attacker began his career with his hometown club Palace, making his senior debut as a 17-year-old in an exciting side that included Victor Moses and Clinton Morrison.

“We are delighted to have got in such a good player and one that is coming from a club who are now in the Premier League,” said Brewers boss Nigel Clough.

“He is a player who has impressed us over a number of seasons and who has always played well against us.

“He can play wide or through the middle and has pace. He will provide us with a much-needed attacking threat.”

Scannell added: “I'm just looking forward to getting back out on the pitch and playing. I'm really excited.

"I like to get forward, I'm an attacking player and I like to use my strength and get up the pitch. Hopefully throughout the season I can show what I can do for Burton Albion."

Scannell, who qualifies for Ireland through his Armagh-born father, has played all the way up to under-21 level since making his debut for the under-17s in 2007.
