Idah on the double as under-17s secure top seeding for Euros draw
Published: October 16, 2017

Adam Idah struck twice in the second half as the Republic of Ireland topped their European Championship qualifying group and secured top seeding for the Elite Round.

Colin O'Brien's side trailed to Ukraine at half time, the first time they've conceded over the three group games, in the Bulgarian city of Veliko Tarnovo on Monday afternoon.

But a double from Norwich City's Idah, his sixth and seventh of the group, and another from midfielder Adam O'Reilly secured a 3-1 win for the Ireland as they topped the group with maximum pints.

The Boys in Green were already assured of a place in the Elite Round thanks to wins over Azerbaijan and hosts Bulgaria, 6-0 and 3-0 respectively, but top spot was up for grabs.

Ukraine also went into the match on six points, albeit with an inferior goal difference, but a win would have seen them take top spot and become first seeds in the next round.

They took the lead midway through the first half as Vikentii Voloshyn finished from inside the area, but Ireland's dominance eventually counted, and Corkman Idah rounded off the win with his second in injury time.

Both sides are now in the hat for the Elite Round draw, where Ireland will crucially avoid the likes of Germany and Portugal by virtue of being top seeds in the race to England.

The draw will be made at UEFA HQ in Nyon, Switzerland on December 6th.
