James started his career at Hamilton Academical in 2006 and he made 95 league appearances in his three years at the club. In July 2009 he signed for Wigan Athletic in the English Premier League and made over one hundred league appearances for the club over four seasons in the Premier League and five in the Championship season after they were relegated. In September 2013, James rejoined Roberto Martinez at Everton.

Though eligible to play for Scotland, James turned out for the Republic of Ireland from U15 level up to the U21s. In March 2011 he made his debut for the senior international side in a World Cup qualifier against Macedonia and, ahead of the 2016 European Championship, has 33 caps to his name. He was included in the Republic of Ireland's final squad for the 2016 European Championship.
